508.5 Non-School Team Participation

Code No. 508.5

NON-SCHOOL TEAM PARTICIPATION

Extracurricular activities are an integral part of the total educational opportunity provided to students of the Decorah Community School District. The primary objective of the extracurricular program is to encourage student participation in an educationally based, structured and supervised setting. The right to participate in multiple extracurricular activities is open to all students. If participation conflicts occur between District extracurricular activities, these conflicts will be resolved between the student involved, the persons in charge of the extracurricular activities, and the Activities Director.

Once students make the commitment to participate in a District sponsored extracurricular activity, they must accept the responsibility for following rules of training and conduct established by the District and those in charge of the extracurricular activity. These rules will be provided to students participating in a District extracurricular activity at or prior to the first regular meeting of the activity.

A student who participates in school sponsored extracurricular athletics may also participate in a non-school sponsored sport during the same season with the prior approval of the Activities Director and the head coach of the sport they are participating in.  Participation in the non-school sponsored sport shall not conflict with any school-sponsored activity, which will take precedent over any non-school activity.

Considerations for determining whether approval will be granted for students to participate in a non-school sponsored sport and/or event will be:

  1. Regulations established by the Iowa Department of Education at 281 IAC 36 and Iowa Code Section 280.13;
  2. The constitution and bylaws of the state governing organization;
  3. District policies governing extracurricular activities;
  4. Participation and behavioral guidelines established by those in charge of the extracurricular activity.

If participation is not approved, the decision may be appealed to the Superintendent within three (3) calendar days of receipt of the decision.  The decision of the Superintendent shall be final.

A student who participates in a sport sponsored by an organization other than the District without obtaining prior approval as required under this policy shall be ineligible to participate on the District sponsored team in that sport for one-third of the season.  This determination may be appealed in accordance with the appeal procedures outlined in the District’s Good Conduct Policy.
